What is Shabu Shabu?

Shabu shabu roughly translates to ‘swish swish’ referring to the sound made as the sliced meat passes through the water. The dish may have originated in the 13th century as a way for Genghis Khan to efficiently feed his soldier at the end of a long battled day. Mongol troops would have gathered around large pots, cooked together and allowed higher social gatherings.

In the 20th century, shabu-shabu cuisine rapidly spread through Asia and is now a popular dish in Western Countries as well. Together with sukiyaki, shabu-shabu is a common dish that allows family get together to cook, eat and spend more family time in today’s ever changing fast pace life-style.
